British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
