French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.

French police have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.

"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."

Now, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.

Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to disable the propellers of the vessels.

The decision to take action at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which dropped off when the previous government official departed from government.

This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.

Now French authorities will again be allowed to stop boats before they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.

Strong winds are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.

UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
