Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the right to question specific rulings made by the official, following the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
