On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
